Healthy Lifestyle Choices

Lifestyle is the attitudes, thoughts, behaviors, and habits of an individual, family, or community. The word was introduced by Austrian psychiatrist Alfred Adler in his famous essay, The Case of Miss R. With the implied meaning of “the basic nature of human behavior as determined early in life”. There are many definitions of a lifestyle, but in essence, a lifestyle can be thought of as a pattern of behavior that people follow from birth until death. In essence, it is a description of how humans organize their interactions within the social environment.


We all have different kinds of personal lives, but there is one commonality among all of us: all of us live a lifestyle. What kind of a lifestyle do we live, day to day? Is it a mass culture or is it a lifestyle? The difference between a mass culture and a lifestyle is simply the kinds of things we do and the thoughts we have about our lives.

One of the most interesting questions one can ask is what is my “healthy lifestyle”? What kind of a lifestyle am I living? I have thought for some time about this; and although I do not know anyone who exactly fits into any kind of healthy lifestyle, I think it is safe to say that most of us have things in common. I think this is particularly true when it comes to our daily lives, where there are so many things that require our attention and use: house chores, school, working, caring for the family, driving, caring for friends and so on. Most of us don’t think in those terms, but I think it is safe to say that most of us live lifestyles that are similar.

Now then, if we want to change the kinds of things we do in our day-to-day life, we need to shift the focus from the types of things we do to the things we aren’t doing. It is quite simple really; it just requires a willingness to do some introspection. For example, if you eat too much fast food and junk food every day, you aren’t living a healthy lifestyle. On the other hand, if you make sure your children eat healthy, you aren’t living an unhealthy life style. This means you have to be willing to switch your focus in order to find the right lifestyle for you.

In addition to changing your lifestyle in the way you choose to live it is also important to change your lifestyle choices. For example, if you love eating meat and you are a vegetarian, you need to give up eating animal products entirely. However, many people still eat dairy products such as cheese, yogurt, milk and so on. Even if you follow a vegan lifestyle you may choose to still consume some dairy foods such as butter and eggs.

Changing your lifestyle does not have to be a difficult thing to do. It can actually be very rewarding as well. A healthy lifestyle that consists of healthy eating, being active and making wise lifestyle choices can lead to a longer and healthier life.
